Gameplay

Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Dark has two principal modes of play: Story Fashion and Arcade Fashion:

Story Mode

The player takes the function of Alucard, Count Dracula's son, on his mission through Castlevania to put an end to his evil father. He won't exercise this alone, though, every bit he'll meet several other characters along the way, each with their own pending business to have care of within the castle. Overall, the game follows the same premise as Castlevania: Symphony of the Dark, and equally such it includes the same characters, enemies, locations and plot events, with minimal variations to the storyline. One of these variances, still, is that the Master Librarian is met at the commencement of the game, who guides the player through the tutorial and remains as an adviser during the residual of the adventure.

The player starts at the castle'due south entrance, where they are presented with several paths they tin can accept to further explore the building. Some of these areas aren't accessible from the beginning, though, and the player will need to venture further into the castle in gild to collect the necessary ways to achieve them.

The structure of the castle is very similar to that in Symphony of the Nighttime. Each room consists of a different expanse of the castle, having its own distinctive pattern. These, for the most part, are mere aesthetics, though, as they serve only as backdrops for the main cadre of the gameplay: the puzzle battles confronting enemies.

Each time the player enters a new room, they will accept to fight an enemy in a drop-pieces puzzle match (quite similar to Capcom'southward Super Puzzle Fighter Two Turbo). The layout of these matches consists of two playfields –i for each opponent– where gem-looking blocks drop from the top. Equally usual with these types of games, the chief objective is to align several blocks of the same color (three or more in whatsoever alignment) to make them disappear and with this free some space on the histrion's side. Setting up concatenation combos allows the player to build up "attacks" which, once ended, are then delivered to the opponent'due south area in the form of several blocks they'll then have to deal with. The greater the number of blocks that are removed, the more than powerful the attack will be. In that location are likewise bare/inactive blocks that are harder to get rid of (usually only through clearing adjacent blocks). The player can as well equip collected items such as weapons, armor, spells and relics that determine the ability of their attacks, as well as their resistances against those from the opponent.

However, unlike nearly other games in this genre, in Encore of the Night a match doesn't end when the blocks of a player/enemy's playfield reach the top; instead, each character has a lifebar which depletes a piffling every time they receive damage. If a character's playfield gets filled with blocks and some other attack is on its way, then the game determines how many rows of blocks must be destroyed in guild to adjust the incoming attack. This means that huge comebacks are possible from either side. In add-on, an hourglass is located betwixt both playfields which shows how long each plough is and if whatever damage the player has accumulated through matches and combos is dealt to any of the players. The match ends whenever any of the two opponents' lifebar depletes to zero. If the lucifer was won in the role player's favor, then more areas of the castle get accessible to be explored.

Enemies get more difficult as the player progresses through the game, condign faster, smarter and building up more circuitous attacks, usually setting up large chain combos to unleash devastating attacks on the player.

The game also counts with an feel arrangement that builds upwardly with each defeated enemy, assuasive the thespian to level upwards and gaining with this ability points; these can then be allocated to different stats –such as Force, Stamina, Intelligence and Luck– in society to customize the role player grapheme.

In addition, points tin too be allotted to different elemental spell systems, which can be used in boxing with different effects:

  • Fire : These spells focus on dealing direct impairment to the opponent's lifebar, every bit well as removing red blocks from the thespian'due south side.
  • Lightning : These spells make the opponent accept impairment each time they evangelize an assail on the actor, too as filling the enemy'due south playfield with green blocks.
  • Shadow : These spells allow the player to regain health each time an assault is delivered to the opponent, as well every bit increasing the appearance of claret blocks on the role player's side.
  • Holy : These spells focus in reducing received damage, also as increasing the histrion'south maximum lifebar length.
  • H2o : These spells delay the hourglass'south flips, every bit well as making inactive blocks to appear in the enemy's field.

Arcade Mode

Arcade Way mainly consists in simple matches confronting the CPU for a more than coincidental play. The player is offered a roster of characters they can choose from –both heroes and antagonists– each having two specific forms of assail. An opponent must then exist selected also, and besides an surface area inside the castle where the match will take identify.
